This page was constructed to build the case for whether my dog is
Canaan. The debate is completely academic: I got him without
papers, he's fixed, I have no intention of ever giving him up, and
fundamentally, a catalog of traits is more useful than a breed label.
First, I approach the subject with reservation. The Canaan Rescue Network
makes it very clear how rare they are. In
addition to an apparently loyal breeder network, it doesn't look like there are any local breeders. And although I don't
understand the mentality of one who gives up a dog, I certainly don't understand one who spends several hundred dollars on
one, brings it some distance, and then gives it up within two years -- without even telling the shelter what it is.
